Subject of insurance

Ship operating on inland waters (rivers, canals and lakes):

  • hull, machinery, devices, inventory and equipment,
  • freight,
  • expenses (regular supply of fuel, lubricants and other materials consumed in operating the vessel, as well as supplies of food and beverages necessary for upkeep of the crew on the ship),
  • excess of liability,
  • insurance premium.

The following types of ships can be covered:

  • passenger,
  • hydrofoil,
  • ferry boats and cargo ships,
  • tankers,
  • tow-boats,
  • technical,
  • fishing,
  • government.

This insurance covers the following risks

Scope of cover A (standard risks)

Coverage of total loss of the vessel due to:

  • navigational accidents, such as:
    • shipwreck, grounding, sinking,
    • collision, impact of another object, hitting the bottom, against the shore or any hard surface and other extraordinary external events relating to navigation.
  • extremely bad weather conditions such as: storm, lightning, including flood,
  • fire,
  • accidents upon loading, reloading, unloading or moving of the cargo the transport of which is allowed on a respective vessel,
  • explosions on vessel or in its vicinity,
  • impact of a road vehicle or fall of an aircraft or the parts thereof or some other objects,
  • theft or hijacking entire vessel,
  • damages to nuclear devices or reactors,
  • negligence of a captain or crew members or a pilot,
  • providing assistance in towing other vessels during accident,
  • burglary and robbery,
  • accidents on vessel during docking i.e. pulling the vessel out to the shore, while on slipway at a shipyard or launching.

Scope of cover B

This scope of cover includes all risks from scope of cover A (standard risks), in addition to the following risks:
Partial damages:

  • damages to the hull of the vessel arising from the risks stated in coverage A,
  • damages occurred to core and auxiliary machines (engines), propellers, propeller shafts (propeller door), equipment and inventory if caused by: grounding of the vessel, fire, collision with another vessel or sinking,
  • contribution in general average.

Scope of cover C (full cover)

This scope of cover includes all risks stated under covers A and B, in addition to the following risks:

    • all partial damages to the hull of the vessel, main and auxiliary machines, engines, technical devices, equipment and inventory of insured vessel caused by any of the insured risks,
    • in technical vessels, all extraordinary damages to the hull of the vessel, main and auxiliary machines, technical devices, equipment and inventory of insured vessel, arising from the regular wear and tear of such object,


This insurance does not cover losses directly or indirectly caused by:

  • wilful act or gross negligence of the insured,
  • wilful act or gross negligence of a person for whose actions the insured is responsible under the law,
  • the crew on the vessel by arrangement with the insured or by his order, if such losses are not the subject of general average,
  • worn-out condition of material due to age or wear and tear, failure to maintain, decay, rottenness, rust and corrosion,
  • risks that occurred outside navigational limits envisaged in the policy,
  • ice risk, if immediately upon formation of ice on the river the vessel is not directed to the nearest winter harbour,
  • the risk of war or war-like operations, regardless of whether the war is declared or not, sabotage, revolution, uprising, civil commotions, breach of blockade, confiscation, i.e. seizure, capture and the like,
  • smuggling, illicit trade, illicit hunt, illicit navigation the insured has knowledge of, i.e. seizure, capture, and the like,
  • failure to perform definite repair of previous damages, unless the repair has been delayed with the consent of the insurer,
  • nuclear explosion, radiation, radioactive products or waste, except radioactive isotopes that are used for industrial, commercial, agricultural, medical or scientific purposes,
  • lock-out or labour disturbances,
  • unseaworthiness of a vessel, general unfitness as well as unfitness for a particular voyage and carriage, due to either technical defects or lack of equipment, inadequate crew, overloading, illegal or irregular loading, excessive number of passengers aboard the vessel, as well as where the vessel’s draft exceeds the depth of the channel reduced by 20 cm, of which the insured was aware or could have been aware had he operated with due care,
  • loss sustained by the insured only indirectly due to damage to the vessel or because the vessel lacks necessary documents, such as loss of profit, demurrage, obligation to pay indemnity due to non-performance of contract on transport by insured vessel,
  • salvage costs incurred in the process of getting vessel afloat again, if it is performed by insured vessel’s own means,
  • costs connected to recovery or removal of a shipwreck or parts thereof, regardless of whether it is done by order or not (scope of cover A and cover B),
  • costs connected to winter and wintering regardless of the cause of such costs, except if otherwise agreed,
  • costs of disencumbering a vessel and other expenses that would be incurred due to low level, as well as navigation costs,
  • irregular loading of hazardous cargo,
  • any claim under any liability for losses to property or death or bodily injury submitted by any person and related to an insured vessel,
  • letting a vessel drift with the current,
  • any loss, damage, liability or expenses directly or indirectly incurred or increased or resulting from the use or operation of any means intended to inflict harm, of any computer, computer system, computer software program, malicious codes, computer viruses or processes or any other electronic system.

The insured is obliged to:

  • report all circumstances important for the risk assessment, as well as any change of circumstances during insurance period,
  • pay the premium within the period stipulated in the policy,
  • take due care of the insured vessel during insurance period.

In case of loss, the insured is to:

  • take all measures to avoid or minimise the loss,
  • immediately notify the insurer of the loss as soon as he becomes aware of it,
  • immediately report the navigational accident to Marine Office, and if the accident involves burglary, theft or other criminal offence, immediately notify the competent body thereof,
  • take all legal and other measures to ensure and safeguard all rights against persons liable for damage, as well as, upon request of the insurer, obtain and deliver all necessary papers, in particular certificate confirming cession of rights against persons liable for damage,
  • upon insurer’s request, obtain offers made by several shipyards or specialized repair shops for repair of a damaged vessel, within the period agreed upon by the insurer but not to exceed 15 days from the accident,
  • in the case of a vessel being damaged (ruined), make a damage report, sign it and have it verified by the relevant port authorities,
  • submit to the insurer a claim for damages with supporting documents.

 Premium is paid in instalments.

Bonus-malus is agreed on the basis of the loss ratio during the period of minimum 3 years.
