If you are travelling abroad with a motor vehicle, in addition to vehicle registration certificate and International Driving Permit, you may need to have an International Motor Insurance Card or a so-called Green Card.
Do you know when you are not required to have a Green Card when entering the territory of another country i.e. for which countries you do not need a Green Card?
On 22 November 2011, the Republic of Serbia completed the process of joining the Multilateral Agreement (MA), also known as the Plates Agreement. Apart from Serbia, this agreement was signed by the representatives of 32 national bureaus of insurers from the countries of the European Economic Area and associate member countries.
The Multilateral Agreement entered into force on 1 January 2012 and, as a result, the requirement for motor vehicles usually located on the territory of the Republic of Serbia to have an International MTPL insurance card (Green Card) when entering the territory of any signatory countries, ceased to exist.
This basically means that from 1 January 2012, the vehicles from the Republic of Serbia entering the territory of any signatory country, only need to posses as an evidence of MTPL insurance, a registration mark and/or registration sticker obtained on vehicle registration.
Signatory countries to the Agreement (MA) are the following:
- Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, France, Finland, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland (including Liechtenstein), Andorra, Norway and Iceland.
Drivers from Serbia do not need a Green Card when entering Montenegro, since both countries have signed a special bilateral agreement.
The Green Card remains a compulsory document evidencing MTPL Insurance for vehicles usually located on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, but entering some of the following countries:
- Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Morocco.
The possession of our Green Card while visiting any of the aforementioned countries provides you with the insurance protection against possible material and non-material damages to the third parties resulting from a traffic accident.
